Stimulus Package Changes Federal Income Tax Withholdings

President Obama has signed the stimulus package, The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, into law.  What does this mean for employers?  The stimulus package does include the new, Making Work Pay Tax Credit, a change to the federal tax withholdings for employees. Employers are being asked to implement the changes as soon as possible no later than April 1, 2009. These changes will increase the paychecks of the American workers.

Employers can let their employees know that they, the employee, do not have to do anything to receive this benefit. They do not have to fill out a new W-4. The tax credit for those who qualify will be automatic.

I am a NY cpa witha small pratice, we have been using accountants world software called accoutants relif and are 85% satisfied, we also used their After the fact paroll andwere 75% satisfied last year, but this quarter it has been a nightmare. I would like to know what other accounting and integrated after the fact payroll software maybe avaible ?

There were definitions to create, tables to create, tables to fill in, and programming to tie it all together.   If after the initial run in,weaknesses were discovered, more IT time to fix these. Low cost software solutions tended to be cheap to buy and very expensive to setup, run and maintain.

Many modern low-end Manufacturing Software programs include menus and “wizards” to walk the small business owner through the steps of setting the system up themselves.

If they choose not to personally do this task, it may still be possible to use other internal labor, in engineering or quality who do not need to be programmers, they just need to understand the task and go through intuitive menus and wizards.  One word of caution is that the software chosen should be able to handle increases in the business, without upgrading.  Some good homework is in order here, but that’s a topic for another day.
